HCS Navigator Experiences...
- Imagine at school one day you started to feel really ill and with each passing moment your body is in constant pain which just seem to get worse to the point of unbearable.
A few hours later I found myself at the hospital in which the last thing I remember was being told that the doctors do not know what was wrong with me and an emergency surgery was needed. When I awoke I was told that I have cirrhosis and needed a liver transplant. Thankfully I was young and still insured through my parents, which led to me traveling to Baltimore for a second opinion and being placed on a donor list, which did not help me. Immediately afterwards I was dropped by my father’s insurance. Thank God for the most part I was in good health and after seven years my mothers insurance, British American along with Olympus accepted my case.
After taking upon my case I must say that British American and HCS helped me and my
family tremendously. The insurance took care of all the major expenses, made sure we had a translator and a allowance. Moreover, Mr. Sanchez, the representative for HCS was extremely helpful as he constantly called to check on how me and my family was doing, he was most helpful in answering questions and helping with any concerns that arose during our stay in Columbia.
In coming to Columbia I had many built up perceptions based on what I was told and other concerns concerning my health. I had no idea that my stay there would turn out
to be the best trip of my life and I can gladly say that it was much better than I expected. I t turned out that I got a second chance at life, met people who are very nice, caring; learn a new culture and language.
Adjusting to a new way of life was a little difficult at first and most of the time it was really boring. Thankfully, my boredom didn’t last very long because I quickly met people who were very fun to be with along with my current girlfriend. This led me to try and understand the language much quicker and allowed me to try many new things such
as the food, dancing the bachata, enjoy different music and many more.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the transplant team at Valle De Lilly hospital for they have given me a second chance at life. Arriving at the hospital I was most pleased that they had numerous English speaking doctors available and they made sure my family was well informed of what was going to be done in terms of the surgery before and after. Moreover, during my stay within the hospital they made me feel pleasant and were extremely nice and caring. On the other hand, the nurses couldn’t speak any English which made for some funny and awkward situations. However they did their best to make sure that I was comfortable which turned out to be more than enough.
P.S. I would like to give a special shout to my nutritionist she is mad cool.- -Alex Reckley, Transplant Recipient
